Abstract

407,049. Bitumen boilers. DALE, H. L., St. Stephen's House, Victoria Embankment, London. Sept. 8, 1932, No. 25058. [Class 107.] A boiler for liquefying bituminous or like substances is provided with one or more rows of spaced heat. conducting elements which project through the wall of the boiler and into the furnace. In the form shown, the boiler 1 is divided into two compartments 1<a>, 1<b>, by a removable perforated metal plate 2 slidably arranged in guides 3. The compartment 1<a> is provided with a plurality of hollow cylindrical members 9, the lower ends of which project through the wall of the boiler and into the furnace flue 5. Each member 9 contains a small quantity of water 9<a> which is converted into high-temperature steam. The upper ends of the members 9 are pointed so that they quickly penetrate the lumps of bitumen which are supplied to the compartment 1<a>. The bitumen, when melted, passes through the plate 2, which act as a preliminary filter, and into the compartment 1<b> whence it is delivered throu h an outlet 7. In a modification, the heat-conducting elements consist of rods or bars of a good heat-conducting metal such as copper. Specification 209,271, [Class 107], is referred to.
