Abstract
A catalyst for the hydrogenation of aldehydes to alcohols is prepared by mixing equimolecular amounts of copper nitrate and ammonium chromate in aqueous solution and reducing the dried precipitate with hydrogen at 500 DEG C.ALSO:In the process described in Specification 381,476 for the preparation of alcohols, the addition of a solvent is dispensed with, since the alcohol product itself acts as a dispersing agent. The same feature is also dispensed with in the process claimed in Claim 1 of Specification 385,488. Furthermore, the calcium formate used in these processes may be replaced by another salt or salts of formic acid. According to the examples: (1) hydrogen is forced under pressure into an autoclave containing calcium formate, the calcium salts of coco-nut oil fatty acids and a copperchromium catalyst; after maintaining the temperature at 280 DEG C. for some time, the autoclave is cooled and the reaction product decomposed with hydrochloric acid; extraction of the mass with ether gives a product of high hydroxyl value; (2) similar treatment of a mixture of sodium formate and the sodium salts of coco-nut oil fatty acids gives rise to a similar product. The catalyst is prepared by mixing equimolecular amounts of copper nitrate and ammonium chromate in aqueous solution and reducing the dried precipitate with hydrogen at 500 DEG C.
