The invention relates to the conversion of di-sec-butyl ether
in liquid form in sec-butyl alcohol by water attachment using
Sulfuric acid as a catalyst.
It is known that the production of ethers by condensation of
Alcohols in the presence of aqueous sulfuric acid is a reversible reaction.
In the American patent specification 1 733 720 has therefore been proposed that
Water attachment to ether, for example methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl ethers,
with sulfuric acid in suitable concentrations of 40 to 85% and at temperatures
above ioo '°'. If now the di-sec-butyl ether in the patent mentioned
is subjected to the specified conditions, but only very low yields
of alcohol obtained, and significant decomposition and polymerization will occur. on.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a process for converting, des
Provide di-sec-butyl ether in sec-butyl alcohol, which together with the known
Process for the production of sec-butyl alcohol from n-butylene can be carried out
can. According to the invention, the process is for the addition of water to di-sec-butyl ether
characterized in that aqueous sulfuric acid in concentrations of 7o
up to 78 percent by weight at temperatures between 5o and 75 ° on the di-sec-butyl ether
brings into action, the molecular ratio of ether to acid to 0.3
i does not exceed and the exposure time is 5 to 60 minutes.
The exposure time required for successful conversion is of crucial importance for the method according to the invention. It can be experimentally determined for any particular condition by plotting the conversion versus time as a curve, as shown in the graph. Here the curves OABC and ODE represent the conversion at 70 and 60 ° for a molecular ratio of ether to acid of 0.13: i for 75% sulfuric acid, while the lines OFG and OHIC, respectively, show a molecular ratio of ether to acid of o, 065: r, also with 75% sulfuric acid. It is advisable to use a treatment time of 30 minutes at a temperature of 6 ° at an acid concentration of about 75% and ether-acid mixtures with a molecular ratio of o, oi to o, i: i, while mixtures with a molecular ratio of o, i to o, 2: i treated for 15 minutes at 70 °. These conditions correspond to a conversion of about 75 to 78% with high efficiency.
The method according to the invention can also be used in a modified form
in connection with the known process for the production of sec-butyl alcohol
n-Butylene can be carried out by sulfation, in which the as a by-product
recovered secondary butyl ether is recycled to the butylene absorption stage
will. In this case it is advantageous to proceed in such a way that the ether is removed under atmospheric pressure
absorbed in the sulfuric acid before the butylene absorbs under increased pressure
will. However, both can optionally also be added together. Here but
the amount of ether formed as a by-product, if the acid is of the stated concentration
is used for the sulfation process, usually not the molecular ratio
of - o, o6: i in relation to the acidity, the entire amount can be used continuously
be returned in the cycle.
