Abstract

The hydrolysis of highly-acid titanium sulphate solutions is effected after addition of say 5 per cent of a solution of more basic titanium sulphate containing 1.5--1.8 parts of sulphuric acid by weight to each part by weight of titanium oxide. Hydrolysis may then be effected in an open container at atmospheric pressure. The "addition" solution may be obtained by first forming sodium meta-titanate from precipitated titanium hydroxide or rutile by the action of caustic soda, extracting the alkali by treatment with water, and dissolving the titanium oxide in a small amount of hot concentrated sulphuric acid.
