[Classes 6 (i) and 6 (ii).] Tines or blades of diggers, scrapers, forks, rakes &c. are secured by splitting the shanks thereof, inserting each shank into a socket in the holder, and driving one or more tapered pins through a hole or holes in the holder to pass entirely through the slit transversely or endwise into the slit. In Fig. 5, the shank has two slits 6<a>, 6b, each receiving a pin 2<a>, 2<b>, while in Fig. 7, two pins 2<a>, 2b pass through the same slit. In Fig. 9, a rectangular wedge 2 passes endwise into the slit and in Fig. 13, a tapered screw 2 passes endwise into a threaded socket 7 intersected by the slit. With a rectangular shank, the slit may pass diagonally and each slit may have an enlarged inner end. In Figs. 19 and 21, the slit 6 passes into the shank from the side thereof, the pin 2 passing through the slot, Fig. 19, or also engaging a recess in the socket, Fig. 21. In Figs. 28 and 30, tool shanks 1 of rectangular or dovetail section are received in open-sided sockets. Indentations of various forms may be provided in the shank to increase its grip on the socket, and such indentations may intersect.
