Abstract

In apparatus as described in Specification 405,462 the reaction tubes 24 are maintained under tension, e.g. by springs 54, and are secured against vibration by passing through asbestos sheets 59 clamped between iron plates 60. The gas supply pipe 56 is rigidly supported by a frame attached to the furnace and is connected to the reaction tubes by flexible copper tubes 52 and detachable couplings 46. The flow of gas to the reaction tubes is restricted by the provision of nozzles or perforated discs in the supply tubes at the points 57. <PICT:0405463/III/1>
