[Class 44.] In a sliding-clasp fastener each element engages with only one element on the opposite stringer, one set of elements having each two rounded-off claws to embrace a neck on the co-operating element of the other set. Fig. 15 shows clawed elements 4 on the stringer 7 engaging flat elements, with side notches 2 forming the neck, on the other stringer 6. The stringers are separable if the slider-retaining wedge 8 is spaced sufficiently from the lowermost elements. Fig. 17 shows clawed elements 4 on both stringers with each set of elements notched at 2 to form the neck. The disengagement in this case additionally requires a relative sidewise movement of the elements which is obtained by forming one of the slider channels with a stepped portion. Fig. 20 shows double elements of shackle form, one limb of each double element being provided with claws and the other limb being plain but necked. The shackles may co-operate only with one opposite shackle, as shown, or may co-operate with shackles above and below. The metal parts may be of aluminium and magnesium alloys and coloured by electrolytic oxidation. For sliding-clasp fasteners with inter-engaging elements of known form, the two bottom elements engage only with each other, the bottom element on one stringer having roundedoff claws to embrace a neck on the bottom element of the other stringer ; this arrangement prevents the fastener being opened from the bottom.
