Abstract
Mordant, substantive, acid wool and vat dyes, dyeing with.--Furs, to be dyed by the application of a chrome dye, a direct cotton dye, an acid dye, a vat dye (by the usual vatting method), or a mixture of dyes of any one of these classes, are pre-treated with a quaternary-ammonium salt derived from a monamine and containing a long chain aliphatic radicle of not less than 8 carbon atoms, the salt being free from hydroxyaliphatic groups when containing no acylamino group. Specified salts are dodecyl-and octadecyl-pyridinium bromides. The treatment may be effected in conjunction with a tanning process. The following examples are specified. (1) Oil-tanned rabbit skins are immersed for \ba1/2\be hour at 40 DEG C. in an aqueous solution of octadecylpyridinium bromide, rinsed with cold water and dyed a full green shade by treatment for 1--2 hours in a bath at 40 DEG C. containing Acid green G and formic acid. (2) The dyebath in (1) is replaced by one containing Anthracene brown WLR and acetic acid to obtain a brown shade. (3) Untanned rabbit skins are tanned with basic chrome alum in the usual manner with an addition of octadecylpyridinium bromide and are subsequently dyed a full rich black by treatment for 1--2 hours in a bath at 75 DEG C. containing Naphthalene black 12B and sulphuric acid. (4) The dyebath in (3) is replaced by one containing Chlorazol fast black BK and acetic acid. (5) Skins are tanned with basic chrome alum in the usual manner and thereafter treated for \ba1/2\be hour in a bath at 85--90 DEG C. containing octadecylpyridinium bromide, rinsed and dyed by treatment for 1--2 hours in a bath at 85--90 DEG C. containing Disulphine blue V, the bath being gradually exhausted with formic acid. Specification 398,175 is referred to.
