Abstract

An oxychloride cement is prepared by mixing magnesium oxide or calcined magnesite and sufficient of a solution of magnesium chloride and magnesium bromide to render it plastic and allowing it to set. Instead of a synthetic mixture of magnesium chloride and bromide, the residual liquid resulting from the abstraction of salt from sea water by the solar method may be used, the specific gravity being preferably between 19 to 22 Baume. The usual fillers such as sawdust and the usual aggregates such as sand and gravel may be added. The product may be used for walls and floors or for roads, or cast into moulds to form blocks. When colours are added to the mixture it is necessary to add a small amount of zinc oxide to prevent the colours from running. In an example 1/4 cubic yard of calcined magnesite, 1 cubic yard sand, and 35 gallons sea water residual are mixed to a plastic state and allowed to set.
