Abstract

Azo dyes, forming on the material; printing.--In the production of azo dyestuffs on the fibre by impregnation with a solution of a substantive coupling component and subsequent development with a solution of a diazo compound, the material is passed, immediately after the treatment with the diazo solution, through a space heated substantially above the atmospheric temperature in order to accelerate and complete the coupling operation. Processes in which the material is impregnated with an o -methylsulphonic acid of an aromatic amine in addition to a substantive coupling component are excluded. The method is of particular advantage in using diazo compounds which couple slowly and in the production of resist effects. Specified slowly coupling diazo compounds are those of aminodiarylamines and related compounds such as the diazo components of Specifications 286,274, 313,865, and 329,960, [all in Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for]. The following examples are specified. (1) Material, grounded with a liquor containing the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, turkey red oil and caustic soda, is dried and passed through a cold bath containing the diazonium chloride of 4 - amino - 4<1> - methoxydiphenylamine and is immediately, without exposure to air, passed through a steamer wherein it is treated at 110--115 DEG C. for about 30 seconds, passed through a bath at 40 DEG C. containing dilute hydrochloric acid, rinsed and soaped. (2) Material, grounded and dried as in (1), is printed with an aqueous white resist paste containing aluminium sulphate, starch tragacanth thickening and kaolin, dried, passed through a cold diazo bath as in (1), immediately passed through a steamer as in (1) or between pairs of flat hollow steam-heated iron plates, passed through a bath at 80 DEG C. containing dilute hydrochloric acid, rinsed, passed through a bath at 80 DEG C. containing sodium bisulphite, rinsed and soaped to obtain a white resist on a blue ground. (3) The white resist paste of (2) is replaced by an aqueous yellow resist paste containing the sulphuric acid ester salt of leuco-3 : 4 : 8 : 9-dibenzopyrene-5 : 10-quinone, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, the monoethyl ether of diethylene glycol, starch tragacanth thickening, sodium bisulphite, ammonium thiocyanate, chrome yellow and kaolin, and the development and further treatment are as in (2). (4) The yellow resist paste of (3) is replaced by a similar aqueous green resist paste containing, as the sulphuric acid ester salt, that of leucodimethoxydibenzanthrone, and the development and further treatment are as in (2).
