Abstract

Azo dyes insoluble in water are made by coupling in substance or on the fibre diazo compounds of amines of the formula <FORM:0463046/IV/1> [R=a hydrocarbon radicle which may be substituted] with arylides of 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic or benzocarbazole-o-hydroxy-carboxylic acids. Deep reddish-blue to bluish black shades are obtained. In examples (1) cotton is grounded with 2<1> : 3<1>-hydroxynaphthoylamino - 2 - methyl - 4 - methoxybenzene and developed with diazotised 4-amino-N-methylnaphthosultam, (2) the dyestuff of (1) is made in substance, (3) a mixture of the diazoimino compound from the above diazo component and sarcosine, the above coupling component, turkey red oil, caustic soda and starch tragacanth is printed on cotton and after drying the colour is developed with an acid treatment. In a table dyes from the following additional components are described: diazo components: the N-hydroxyethyl-, N-n-propyl-, N-ethyl-, N-n-butyl-, N-phenyl- and N-(p-anisyl)- derivatives of 4-amino-naphthosultam: coupling components: the 2<1> : 3<1>-hydroxynaphthoyl derivatives of o-toluidine, 4- or 5-chloro-2-methyl-1-aniline, 5-chloro-2 : 4-dimethoxy - 1-aniline, o-chloraniline, o- and p-anisidine, a - or b -naphthylamine, aniline, 2-methoxy-4- or 5-chlor-1-aniline, m-nitroaniline and 4-chlor - 2 : 5 - dimethoxy - 1 - aniline; the 7<1> : 8<1> - benzo - 2<1> : 3<1> - hydroxycarbazoyl derivatives of p-anisidine and 2-methyl-4-methoxy-1-aniline. Specifications 6379/12, [Class 2 (iii)], 17279/13, [Class 15 (ii)], and 398,516 are referred to. 4-Aminonaphthosultams of the above formula are obtained by treating N-substituted 1-naphthylamine-8-sulphonic acids with agents splitting off water, e.g. phosphorus oxychloride, nitrating and reducing.
