Abstract

403,626. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Fitzgerald, A. S. ; Warwick Road, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) June 6, 1932, No. 15989. Convention date, June 4, 1931. [Class 38 (iii).] Varying E.M.F.-A motor 43 driving ventilating or other apparatus is controlled by a photo-electric cell alternately illuminated for constant predetermined periods of time with light beams controlled respectively by the light characteristics of a material and by a variable aperture which is adjusted to maintain the illumination of the cell constant. When the two beams are of equal intensity, the relay 24 is de-energized completing the input circuit of valve 56 which includes the potentiometer 40. The motor 43 is fed from the A.C. supply 46 through a transformer 47 and two valves 48, 49 whose grids are fed from a transformer 50. In order to control the motor 43 in accordance with the potentiometer setting 42, the phase relation of the output of valves 48, 49 is controlled by energizing the transformer 50 from an impedance phase shifting network comprising a transformer 52 fed from the A.C. supply 46 and feeding a resistance 53 and a reactance 54 whose saturating winding 55 is energized by the output of the valve 56 in accordance with the potential applied to the grid and derived from the potentiometer 40. Specification 400,206, [Group XXXV], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 291,397, [Class 97 (i), Optical systems &c.], and 341,200, [Group XX].
