Abstract

403,161. Securing steering-wheels on shafts. HAMILL, W. W., Beechcroft, Four Oaks Road, Four Oaks, Warwickshire. July 19, 1932, No. 20373. [Class 80 (ii).] A shock-absorbing steering-wheel, for self-propelled vehicles such as tractors, comprises a rubber annulus 1 drivingly arranged between a radially toothed, sinuous, square or hexagonal sleeve 2 secured to the steering-column 3, and the complementary hub 6 of the wheel, to absorb both rotational and axial shocks and permit universal movement of the wheel. The teeth may be short as at 5 or, as shown at 10, may overlap to afford a mechanical connection in the event of failure of the rubber. The sleeve and hub both have radial flanges 22, 23 and 20, 21 to support the wheel axially. The flanges may alternatively be provided on the rubber annulus. Spaces 25 are provided in the teeth of any of the members to accommodate the rubber under compression. There is an upper cover plate 28 which may be non- rotatable and be secured to a cable or controlrod passing down a hollow steering-column. The lower flange 21 of the hub may be extended as at 27 to form a lower cover.
