Abstract

1,035,458. Motor cycles. P. W. BOTHWELL. Oct. 14, 1964 [April 22, 1964], No. 16752/64. Headings B7E and B7H. The front wheel 36 of a motor cycle is journalled on a stationary hub 34 steerable about a king-pin 35 carried by an axle 26 which is suspended from the cycle frame by a U-shaped swinging link 31 and resilient telescopic members 16. Roller bearings 27 rotatably connect the telescopic member 16 to split attachments 30 on the axle 26, and the arms of the link 31 are rotatably secured to each end of the axle. Each telescopic member 16 includes slidings covers 24, 25 protecting a spring 22 surrounding telescopic members 17, 18 connected by splines and by a pin-and-slot connection 23, 23a which limits extension of the members. The hub 34 is steerable about the king-pin 35 by separate pivotable handlebars 9, 10 which are interconnected by gear teeth 11, 12 and a gear-wheel 13 for conjoint rotation and are connected by universal couplings 19 to the telescopic members 16 which transmit steering movements to the hub 34 through toothed segments 39, 40. A bevel gear ring 47 on the wheel 36 meshes with a bevel pinion 46 which is supported by a bracket 52 on the hub 34 or by a ring (Fig. 4, not shown) rotatable on the boss of the wheel and is driven by a universally-jointed telescopic shaft 48 from a gear-box 41 which also transmits drive to the rear wheel. A brake disc 49 is secured to the wheel 36.
