Abstract

403,087. Inertia switches. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and LUCAS, 0., Great King Street, Birmingham. June 13, 1932, No. 16651. [Class 38 (v).] To minimize fire risks on motor vehicles, the battery a is mounted so as to slide forward against a spring d in the event of a collision and break circuit beween two terminalsf,g. The spring d is strong enough to prevent movement of the battery during normal retardations. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the terminals f, g are normally connected by a bridging member h with a lip j overhanging the terminal f. When the collision occurs, the terminal g moves to the right with the battery and a spring i pulls away the member h. When the battery returns under the action of the spring d the contacts f, g do not touch and the circuit remains broken. In a modification, Fig. 9 circuit is normally completed between two conducting strips p, r backed by insulation q, s. Upon collision the strip p, q moves to the right and on the return movement slides above the strip r, s so that the insulating portions now touch and the circuit remains broken. In another modification a spring-pressed insulating rod comes between the terminals f, g on collision, and in another a wire joining the terminals f, g snaps allowing an insulating tube to fall and keep the terminals separated.
