Abstract

402,873. Crimping paper sheets. HARBORNE, T. L., Torwood, The Shrubbery, Weston-super-Mare. July 1, 1932, No. 18587. [Class 141.] In a machine for fixing together superposed sheets of paper or the like by passing them between a pair of serrated or knurled wheels which crimp the plies together as they are fed over an associated table, means are provided to adjust the pressure between the crimping wheels and separate means to bring about a quick release or disengagement thereof without moving the pressure-adjusting means, whereby the crimping may commence or cease at any desired part of the sheets, packages or the like. The crimping wheels 1, 2 are mounted in a frame 5 and the shaft 3 of the wheel 2 is driven by power or manually by the handle 4. The spindle 10, carrying the wheel 1, is pivoted at 11 and the wheel 1 is adapted to be resiliently pressed against the wheel 2 by a block 13, which bears on the spindle 10 and is eccentrically mounted in a pair of plates 12. The plates 12 are adjustably pressed downwards by rotating a knurled nut 14, which carries a spindle 15 threaded in a block 16 secured between the plates. A rubber bush 18 and a spring 17 serve to render resilient the mounting of the wheel 1, and the pressure can be instantaneously released by partially rotating the eccentric block 13 by means of external hand lever secured to one of the block trunnions. The pressure is re-applied when the hand lever is restored to its original position. The lower wheel 2 may be adjustable and the block 13 may be replaced by a cam &c. A guide plate for the sheets as they are fed to the wheels is adjustably mounted on the table 6, and comprises a pair of rigid channels 20 united by an inserted rubber block 22. A pair of hooks, slidable along opposite edges of the table, are joined by a spring band, the tension of which may be adjusted, and the hooks are attached to the ends of the channels 20, whereby the position of the guide plate as a whole may be adjusted to any requisite position relatively to the wheels 1 and 2, and clamped in such position. The guide plate may be fixed on the table 6 and the latter or the wheels may be moved to effect the same relative adjustment.
