Abstract

402,515. Changing signs. POTTER, E., 3, Staple Inn, High Holborn, London.- (Poliakoff, R. ; 1071, 6th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) July 1, 1932, No. 18629. [Class 3 (i).] Flexible panels 7 having display matter on both sides and fitted with suspension rods 6 at both ends are transferred from the front to the back of a pack by a continuously rotating roller 8. The action inverts the panel so that it gradually slides down inclined supports 5 to display its other side when it again reaches the front of the pack. The mechanism for raising the panels 7 comprises a pawl 22 on a frame 20 having a projection 21 which is lifted by a pin 15 on the roller 8, the roller having a peg 9, which takes under the rod 6 and carries the panel round the roller. A finger 23 pivoted about a spindle 40 falls by gravity against the roller and displaces the rod 6 from the peg 9 and guides the rod beyond the supports 5. The finger 23 is raised from the roller 8 before the following rod 6 on the travelling panel reaches it, by the engagement of the pin 15 with a cam 15<1> on an arm 23<1> rigidly connected through a sleeve 24 with the finger 23, thus conducting this rod 6 on to the supports 5 and inverting the panel. To allow the roller 8 to make several ineffective rotations, and thus ensure a relatively quick transfer of the panel compared with the time of display, the pin 15 is mounted on a pinion 12 meshing with a pinion 13 carrying a cross-shaped cam 14. Both pinions 12, 13 are mounted on the roller 8, and the pinion 13 is registered in position by a spring 17. The cam 14 is advanced step-by-step at each rotation of the roller 8 by a pawl 18 fixed to a spindle 19, thus moving the pin 15 out of the path of the projection 21 for three revolutions of the roller 8 out of four. All these mechanisms are duplicated at the other end of the roller to manipulate the rods 6 evenly. A spring-pressed roll, which together with the roller 8 may be rubber-covered, bears on the panel 7 to give the latter frictional engagement with the roller 8 and after the pins 9 have disconnected. The pawl 18 may be put out of action periodically to display a particular sheet for a longer time by a pivoted cam 38 which bears against an arm 44 fast on the spindle 19. The arm 44 is forced out to render the pawl 18 ineffective by a pin 41 rotated by gearing from the roller shaft, and a gravity lever 37 which holds it out is disengaged after a period by cams 36a, 36b on an interchangeable disc 36.
