. This invention relates to devices for advertising and educational purposes and for the dissemination of news, etc., and is in many respects an improvement on and continuation of the invention set forth in my Patent No. 1,313,110, issued August 12, 1919.
One of the objects of the device is to provide mechanical means for operating rolls carrying a strip upon which is printed, pasted or otherwise secured or formed, mattcr to be displayed to the observer.
Another object is to produce a device whereby a phonograph may be utilized to give a lecture upon a subject and mechanical means operable in synchronism therewith may present visual representations ofthe subjects discussed,
Another object is to produce a device of this nature wherein the display rolls are automatically rewound when exhausted and at a much more rapid rate than they are moved during the display winding.
Another object is to provide a tension drive for the rolls to compensate for the varying rates of speed of the strip due to the increased or diminished size of the roll during winding and unwinding.
VVit-h these and other objects in view which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the-invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine constructed according to my invention.

The general function of the device may be stated to'be the dissemination of knowledge; but as this may seem vague and gen erah the matter will first be explained somewhat indetail. In using the device for ad-' vertising purposes, the machine may be installed in a show window orion a street corner and the roll or rolls of flexible materialwhich are fed up before the observer are provided with strips of advertising matter interspersed with strips setting forth the latest news items or other matter of interest or artistic value.

Referring in detail to thedrawing, 10 represents the casing of the machine which may be constructed of any suitable material and mounted upon casters or a suitable pedestal. The frame is provided in front with suitable display windows 11 and is provided with doors or other means permitting access to the internal mechanism.
The interior of the casing is provided with sockets to receive electric light bulbs 12 for illuminating the interior of the apparatus. Secured to any desirable portion of the framework is a rheostat conventionally shown at 13, a fuse box 14, a switch 15, and a motor 16 all in circuit with any suitable source of electrical energy. The speed of the motor is controllable by "the rheostat as will be readily understood.
The motor shaft 17 has secured to it a gear pinion 18 in mesh with a larger gear 19, Wheels 18 and 19 being enclosed in a gear case 20 and running in oil. The shaft 21 of gear 19 is provided with a worm 22 in which are meshed worm gears 23 and 24 arranged on opposite sides of said worm so as to turn in opposite directions. The gears 23 and 24 are mounted on and adapted to operate upright shafts 25 and 26, respectively, which carry at their upper ends respective clutch members 27 and 2S keyed to them and movable longitudinally thereon.
The clutch members 27 and 28 are provided with annular grooves 29 into which extend fingers 30 formed as bifurcations on opposite ends of a rock lever 31 mounted to rock on a pivot 32 arranged midway between the clutch members 27 and 28. The rear end of lever 31 is extended beyond the member 27 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. For the present it will be suliicient to state that rocking of lever 31 will raise one or the other of clutch members 27 and 28 into engagement with a respective clutch member and lower the other out of engagement.
Two shafts 33 and 34 are respectively mounted in axial alignment with shafts 25 and 26 and carry respective clutch members 35 and 36 rigidly secured to their lower ends and adapted for engagement by clutch members 27 and 28, respectively, when the latter are elevated by lever 31. Shaft 34- carries at its upper end a pinion 37 which meshes with a larger gear 38 secured on the upper end of a stub shaft 39. Shaft 39 carries near its lower end a gear pinion 4O meshing with a gear 41 on an upright shaft 42.
Shaft 33 carries a. gear 43 meshing a gear 44 secured on a stub shaft 45 to which is also secured a pinion 46 meshing a gear 47 on the above mentioned shaft 42.
It will thus be seen that by throwing in the clutch 27 the shaft 42 will be driven in one direction; while by throwing in clutch 28, shaft 42 will be rotated in the reverse direction and at a much slower rate of speed owing to the sizes and relations of the gears in the two trains of gearing.
Shaft 42 carries at its upper end a bevel gear 48 which meshes with a bevel gear 49 mounted on the front end of a horizontal stub shaft 50 carrying at its rear end a bevel gear 51 which in turn n'ieshes a bevel gear 52 secured to the lower end of a. vertical drive shaft 53. Shaft 53 is provided with a bevel gear 54 for each of the strip-carrying rolls. Any number of rolls may be operated from this shaft 53 or a plurality of such shafts may be similarly operated from shaft 50 as will be readily understood.
Upper and lower rolls 55 and 56 are provided for each strip of display material used, and are respectively mounted upon. transverse shafts 57 and 58 and frictionally operable thereby as will be presently set forth. The rolls are each provided with a metal strip 59 for securing the end. of the display strip 60 to which removable slips 61 may be attached by side strips 62. Or "he slips may be pasted or otherwise secured to the fabric 60, or the information to be imparted printed, painted, or otherwise made an integral part of the strip 60.
Each roll has supported interiorly thereof, a rock arm 63 having its end extended through a slot 64 in the end plate of the roll, and forming a finger 65 beyond said end plate for effecting automatic reversal of the rolls as will be presently described. A plunger 66 is attached to arm 63 and has its outer end seated in an aperture in the cylindrical wall of the roll. A sp-ing 67 tends constantly to move the arm 63 so as to for e the plunger 66 out and to move the finger 65 to the outer end of slot 64. The strip 60 when rolled on the roll will. move plunger 66 to its inner position thereby moving finger 65 to the inner end of slot 64.
The upper shaft 57 is driven by a gear 68, and is provided with screw threaded portion 69 upon which is mounted a nut 70 which may be forced into any desired degree of frictional contact with a washer 71 hearing on the end of roller 55 so that the roll is driven with the shaft 57 but is also capable of being turned independently thereof.
The strip 60 is passed over idler rollers 72 at the front of the machine in passing from one to the other of the active rollers 55 and 56.
The shaft 58 is driven by a bevel gear 73 which meshes one of the gears 54. Mounted on the shaft 58 and to some extent underlying one end plate of the roll 56 is a ratchet wheel 74 which is engaged by a spring dog 75 mounted on the end of the roll 56 so that the roll is driven by the ratchet during downward movement of the strip but is free therefrom during the upward movement. A spring 76 bears against the opposite, end of roll 56 so as to keep the strip constantly stretched tight.
The upper end of the shaft 53 isprovided with a gear 77 which may be connectedwith any suitable train of gearing (not shown) for rotating a phonograph record to effect the delivery of a lecture on the subject being displayed by'the strip 60 and in synchronism therewith. The horn or delivery member of the phonograph is shown at78. It will be understood that during the rewinding operation the operator will remove the stylus of the phonograph from the record, and upon again starting the winding operation, the stylus will be placed again on the record, or mechanical means may be provided for this purpose so that the operator would have only to change the records when necessary.
There remains only the reversing mechanism to be described. The rock lever 31 upon being moved in reverse directions effects operative connection of one or the other of the clutches 27 and 28 and disconnection of the other as above stated which effects either an upward display winding of strip 60 or a more rapid downward rewinding operation. As before stated, the rear end of rock lever 31 is projected rearwardly beyond clutch 27 forming a finger 79 which extends through a rock arm 80 and carries at its rear end a roller 81 adapt ed to rest in one or the other of two notches 82 formed in the front of a body 83 mounted on the lower free end of a plate spring 84:, so that when lever 31 is thrown to either of its operative positions it will not easily be displaced.

The bar 8-5 is provided intermediate its ends with a sleeve 86 which is pivotally connected to a lever 87 at 88, said lever being itself pivoted to the framework at 89. By moving lever 87 by hand, the lever 31 may be thrown to either operative position or held in neutral intermediate position. A pin 90 on lever 87 is adapted to be engaged by a dog 91 when in neutral condition so as to lock the mechanism against operation. The upper end of bar 85 is pivotally connected to the lower of a pair of rock arms 92 which are themselves pivoted at 9-3 to a suitable part of the frame and embrace at their free ends a rod 94 to which they are pivotally secured. Mounted in the upper and lower ends of bar 94 are plungers 95 which are normally pressed outwardly by springs 96.
During normal winding and unwinding operations the fingers 65 of the rolls, above described, are in their inner positions, but when a roll is unwound, the respective plunger 66 is' 1'eleased,and the respective finger 65 moved out into the path of the corresponding plunger 95. As the operation continues, the plunger 95 is forced in and then bar 94 is forced up or down as the case may be until roller 81 is nearly free from the notch 82 in which it has been standing and both clutches are inoperative. At this time, the force of the spring 86 comes into play to effect the slight movement neces sary to throw the roller 81 over the high point into the other notch, and the reverse is effected. 1
While I have described what is deemed to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction hereinset forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.

main driving shaft, clutch mechanism for effecting driving of said main driving shaft by either of said'reversely driven shafts, a plurality of rolls driven by said main driving shaft, a flexible strip operable by said rolls, and means supported in said rolls and controllable by said flexible strip to effect operation'of said clutch mechanism.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a flexible strip carrying matter to be displayed, rolls secured to opposite ends of said strip, a main driving shaft, frictional driving means between said rolls and said main driving shaft, and means mounted in said rolls and controllable by said strip for automatically reversing the driving effect of said shaft, said means including a lever, and a bar mounted adjacent to said lever and extending into juxtaposition with said rolls.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a flexible strip carrying matter to be displayed, rolls secured to opposite ends of said strip, a main driving shaft, means operable by said main driving shaft for driving said rolls, reversely driven shafts each operable for driving said main driving shaft in a respective direction, clutch mechanism for rendering said reversely driven shafts operative and inoperative, a lever for operating said clutch mechanism, and means controllable by said flexible strip for operating said lever.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a flexible strip carrying matter to be displayed, rolls secured to opposite ends of'said strip, a main driving shaft, means operable by said main driving shaft for driving said rolls, reversely driven shafts each operable for driving said main driving shaft in a respective direction, clutch mechanism for rendering said reversely driven shafts operative and inoperative, a lever for operating said clutch mechanism, a bar mounted adjacent to said lever and extending into juxtaposition with said rolls, and means controllable by said strip for operating said bar.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a flexible strip carrying matter to be displayed, rolls secured to opposite ends of said strip, a main driving shaft, means operable by said main driving shaft for driving said rolls, reversely driven shafts each operable for driving said main driving shaft in a respective direction, clutch mechanism for rendering said reversely driven shafts operative and inoperative, a lever for operating said clutch mechanism, a bar mounted adjacent to said lever and extending into juxtaposition with said rolls, a push rod supported with its opposite ends arranged in operative relation to respective ones of said rolls, and means supported by each of said rolls for automatically moving said push rod When said strip is unwound from the respective roll.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a flexible strip carrying matter to be displayed, rolls secured to opposite ends of said strip, a main driving shaft, means operable by said main driving shaft for driving said rolls, reversely driven shafts each operable for driving said main driving shaft in a respective direction, clutch mechanism for rendering said reversely driven shafts operative and inoperative, a lever for operating said clutch mechanism, a bar mounted adjacent to said lever and extending into juxtaposition with said rolls, a push rod supported With its opposite ends arranged in operative relation to respective ones of said rolls, spring-pressed plungers in said push rod, and levers supported by each of said rolls and normally held out of co-operative relation with said plungers by said strip, and automatically operable to effect contact with a respective plunger upon unwinding said strip from a respective roll.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a flexible strip carrying matter to be displayed, rolls secured to opposite ends of said strip, a main driving shaft, means operable by said main driving shaft for driving'said rolls, reversely driven shafts each operable for driving said main driving shaft in a respective direction, clutch mechanism for rendering said reversely driven shafts operative and inoperative, a lever for operating said clutch mechanism, means controllable by said flexible strip for operating said lever, and a spring for maintaining said lever in either of its positions.
