Be it known that we, JOHN LUTZ and CHARLES J. LnYns, citizens of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey,

' easily and conveniently displaying their merchandise, and particularly for thepur pose of displaying horizontal position.

The invention described and claimed herein is an improvement on that described and claimed in an application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed .by us August 8, 1912, Ser. No. 713,993, and is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which rugs in a spread out or Figure 1 is a side view of our improved Y rug displaying machine, the right hand portion thereof being shown in section ;Fig. 2 a plan view of the left end portion of the machine as shown in Fig. 1;Fig. 3 a view looking at the right end portion of the machine, and on an enlarged scale and with part of the construction brokenaway ;Fig.

said clutch disks are also preferably pro-- vided at the top thereof with finger piece 1' We also provide a flexible strip or sheet is composed of fabric or any other suitable material which may be ofany preferred length, and which is placed longitudinally of the table f, and the ends thereof are connected with the rollers h, and onthe strip is are placed the rugs m to be displayed, and in practice said strips with the rugs thereon may be wound onto one of said rollers and then rewound onto the other; roller, and this operation may be repeated as often as desired and the rugs m may thus be exposed in a spread out form for inspection.

The clutch j of the right roller h is thrown' h, vthis operation is reversed, the clutch j on the left roller h is thrown into operation While the corresponding clutch on the right roller k is thrown out of operation, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the left motor '5 is started.

In the above described operation, the hinged table members f and f bear on the bottoms of the rollers h at all times, and in this way the roller from which the strip or sheet is is being unwound will be prevented from racing or turning too freely.

This invention is not limited to the use of the motors i as herein described, nor to any particular form of gearing for transmitting the movement of the shafts i of said motors to the rollers 71., and any suitable means may be provided for turning said rollers alternately, and if. desired said rollers may be turned -by hand.- In Fig. 5 of the drawing, however, we have shown a construction whereby the speed of the roller onto which the strip or sheet is is being wound may be automatically reduced as said strip or sheet is wound thereon so that the speed or movement of the said strip or sheet will not be increased as the dimensions of the said roller increase. In order to accomplish this result, we place at each end ofthe machine, a rheostat n and connect with the bottom of the hinged end members j and f, and preferably centrally thereof, link devices. 0 which are also connected with the arms n of the rheostats n. and a which are connected with the circuit wires of the motors z' and said rheo-stats, in the form of construction shown, are providedwith a plurality of contact points a, and as the table members f and f move downwardly the rheostats will be operated to decrease the speed of the motors, as will be readily understood. In this form of construction we substitute for the weighted arms g and g springs p and p which are secured to the transversely arranged uprights (2 and e and which bear on the bottoms of the table members f and f and cause said table members to bear on the bottoms of the rollers 71. at all times. The rollers f and f are also omitted, but otherwise the construction and operation of the machine is the same, as-that shown in. Figs. 1 to 1 inclusive.

- Other means may be provided for regulating the movement of the rollers h, and a single motor may be employed for operating said rollers andfor regulating the movement thereof, if desired, and other changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A rug displaying machine comprising a base, rollers supported above the end portions of said base, a horizontal table supported between said rollers and provided with movable end members adapted to bear on the bottom thereof, a display strip or sheet of predetermined length passed longitudinally over said table and the end members thereof, and the ends of which are connected with said rollers, motors geared in connection with said rollers, clutch devices JOHN LUTZ.
