Abstract

Water is removed from aliphatic anhydrides as an azeotropic mixture with methylene chloride. The methylene chloride may be injected as liquid or vapour into the anhydride reaction vapours so as to carry off the water while the anhydride and remaining acid are condensed; or the reaction vapours may be led, preferably after limited cooling, below or upon the surface of a body of methylene chloride. The methylene chloride may be used alone or mixed with other liquids such as light paraffins, gasoline, kerosene, ethers, or mixtures of ethers with petroleum hydrocarbons for instance mixtures of ether with petroleum ether, benzene, or homologues of benzene. In an example, methylene chloride is sprayed into the vapour obtained by thermal decomposition of acetic acid, and the mixture is led into the lower part of a fractionating column, and methylene chloride is also added at the top of the column in quantity more than sufficient to remove all the water.
