[Class 5 (i).] A rotary knife machine for cutting up wheat and other grain and of the kind comprising a horizontal rotary shaft carrying knives or cutters which co-act with stationary knives or cutters projecting from the inner surface of a cylindrical chamber into which the grain is fed, a portion or portions of said cylinder being in the form of a screen or screens or being provided with openings to permit of the passage therethrough of the dust and cut corn, has its rotary shaft so mounted that its eccentricity with respect to the stationary cylinder may be so adjusted as to decrease or increase the cutting clearance at that part of the cylinder where the majority of the cutting occurs, viz : at that part where the rotary knives are moving upwardly, at will. The rotary shaft 1, Fig. 1, is carried by arms 2 pivoted at 2<x> off the cylinder axis and may be adjusted by means of a hand wheel 6 through a connecting rod 4, eccentrics 3 and worm gearing 5. Stops on the frame or cylinder end plates co-act with a projection on each of the arms 2 to limit the shaft movement. In a modification, Fig. 4, the shaft 1 is mounted in sliding bearings 10 which are adjustable in a straight line by means of the hand wheel 6 through a screw 12 engaging nuts 12<x> secured to the bearings 10 : stops are provided to limit the shaft movement. In each form, both sets of cutters may be adjustable for wear, the rotary cutters being adjustable on radial arms by set-screw mechanism and the stationary cutters projecting through slots in the cylinder wall and being adjustably mounted on outwardly projecting brackets by means of locking bolts. The dust may be withdrawn by suction and the grain may be fed into the machine at one end through a hopper and delivered through an outlet at the opposite end.
