Abstract
402,189. Wind screen-cleaners. SUTHERLAND, R., 3, Lombard Street, London, and FAIRHURST, C. R., 9, North Street, Leatherhead, Surrey. July 19, 1932, No. 20458. [Class 138 (i).] A windscreen-cleaner comprises a movable wiper arm employed in association with means for delivering hot gas to the screen. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust manifold f of the vehicle containing the windscreen a is provided with a muff e communicating with an impeller d which is adapted to force heated air through a pipe c on to the screen in proximity to the wiper arm b. The bottom of the muff is open to the atmosphere, but it may terminate in a trumpet-shaped pipe the end of which is adjacent to the fan i, which drives the hot air through the pipe c, the impeller in this case being dispensed with. In a further modification, the wiper b is provided with a fan-shaped chamber adapted by creating suction to cause a flow of hot air to the screen. The wiper b, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, is provided with two blades k of indiarubber or other flexible material and is of tubular formation communicating with the pipe c. Apertures l are provided leading to the space between the blades k. In a further construction shown in Fig. 7, the wiper b is provided with an electric resistance p which is adapted to be connected to a source of current whereby the air between the blades k is heated. According to the Provisional Specification, means may also be provided for controlling the amount and temperature of the air flowing to the screen and for regulating the impelling means. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to British Specifications 311,167, 326,042, 335,822, [all in Class 138 (i), Washing and cleaning buildings &c.], and U.S.A. Specification 1,829,396.
