Abstract

A thorium oxide which readily dissolves to form salts when heated with acids is obtained by heating thorium oxalate at temperatures below 500 DEG C. Normal or reduced pressure may be used, and the time of heating should be so selected that "ageing" of the oxide formed is prevented. In examples, the oxalate is heated at 300 DEG C. for 24 hrs. respectively in vacuo and at normal pressure, and thorium nitrate and chloride are produced by dissolving the oxide obtained in nitric and hydrochloric acids. In a reference to the art, it is stated that thorium oxide made by heating the oxalate to 500--600 DEG C. is peptised by acids, and gives with nitric acid a colloidal solution of the oxide.
