Abstract
401,910. Coupling means for toy trains. DANIELS, W. G., 46, Agnes Street, Freeport, Long Island, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 2, 1933, No. 105. [Class 132 (iii). A coupling member for toy trains is of material attracted by a magnet in the train path for uncoupling purposes. The cars 1 of a toy train, travelling on a railroad track 2 with third live rail 3, are coupled by a member 7 of material capable of being attracted by a magnet, e.g. iron or steel, pivoted on the wheel axle 6 and having apart 11 engaging under a flange 5 of a car under the action of a spring 15. The cars are uncoupled when they pass over an electro-magnet 18 in the track of the cars, the part 7 being drawn downwards if the electromagnet 18 is energised by the making of the switch 23 at a remote point in the circuit 21. The electro-magnet comprises an iron core 19 surrounded by a coil 20, and is so arranged that it will not interfere with the electrical system operating the locomotive of the toy train, being spit or placed below level of the same. The electro-magnet may project slightly above the level of the track 2. The construction allows manual uncoupling if desired. The cars 1 can be coupled automatically by pushing them together, the edge 13 of the part 11 riding on the flange 5. The coupling member 7 will facilitate the passage of the cars on curves, the bumpers 5a allowing the part 11 to slide along the flange 5. When the cars are being pushed the bumpers 5a will abut one another, the coupling member being thus relieved of stress.
