Abstract

401,815. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Perrott, L. F. ; 65, Davis Street, Revere, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) July 16, 1932, No. 20196. Convention date, July 16, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] A rectifier having a metal-vapour filling comprises one or more anodes 5, a cathode 8, Fig. 2, and a shield 10 surrounding the cathode and having an aperture 13 at the top and one or more apertures 15 in the plane of the anodes and cathode. It is stated that the discharge passes initially through the aperture 13 and that when the pressure of the filling is stable the discharge passes through the apertures 15. The cathode 8 consists of arcuate strips of metal joined together at their ends by short pieces of metal and may be a rolled punching. It is connected at the top to the shield 10 which acts as the return current lead, and the other lead 9 is taken through the closed bottom of the shield by an insulated bushing. The shield 10 may have extensions 18, Fig. 4, welded to the cap 12. A strip of getter metal 17, such as magnesium, may be attached to the upper end of the shield 10 and flashed prior to introducing the filling which may be mercury.
