Abstract
An apparatus for extracting fats &c. from materials containing them, consists of a number of U-shaped chambers connected in series, in which the central chambers contain a volatile solvent and the end chambers contain a liquid such as water which acts as a seal for the solvent vapours in the central chambers. A series of tanks U1 .. U5 are provided with partition walls U<11> .. U<1>5 to form chambers, the central ones U2, U3 of which contain a volatile solvent such as ether, benzene, or <PICT:0400613/III/1> carbon disulphide and the remainder contain water. A belt B carrying wool or other fabric N passes over rollers G arranged in a zig-zag path, in the chambers where the fabric is squeezed between pairs of rollers G1, and the cleaned fabric is finally wound on a drum U2. Solvent vapours are drawn off through a pipe A1 and compressed in a pump by which the temperature of the vapours is raised, and are forced through a coil Z in which the vapours condense and pass through a device controlling the amount of solvent in circulation, to the chamber U3. Solvent in chamber U2 overflows and falls on the hot coil Z by which the used solvent is vaporized, and the oil residue collects in a chamber O. Since the solvent vapours are continuously withdrawn from the vapour space a pressure difference exists between the limbs of the chambers. A part of the overflow from chamber U2 falls into a chamber Q into which water flows from the chamber U1. The mixture is withdrawn by a pump S, and passes it through a valve P3 into the chamber O in which the solvent is vaporized leaving an upper layer of oil which is drawn off through a pipe D. If desired the fabric may be carried between two belts B. In the treatment of fish and similar materials, the raw material is contained in bags which are attached to the belt B by hooks.ALSO:An apparatus for treating wool, cotton, or other fabrics with a volatile solvent, consists of a number of U-shaped chambers connected in series, in which the central chambers contain a volatile solvent and the end chambers contain a liquid such as water, which acts as a seal for the solvent vapours in the central chambers. A series of tanks U1 . . U5 are provided with partition walls U<1>1 . . U<1>5 to form chambers, the central ones U2, U3 of which contain a volatile solvent such as ether, benzene, or carbon disulphide, and the remainder contain water. A belt B carrying a fabric N passes over rollers G, arranged in a zig-zag path, in the chambers, where the fabric is squeezed between pairs of rollers G1, and the cleaned fabric is finally wound on a drum N2. Solvent vapours are drawn off through a pipe A1 and are compressed in a pump raising the temperature of the vapours and forcing them through a coil Z, in which the vapours condense <PICT:0400613/IV/1> and pass through a device controlling the amount of solvent in circulation, to the chamber U3. Solvent in chamber U2 overflows and falls on the hot coil Z whereby the used solvent is vaporized and the oil residue collects in a chamber O. Since the solvent vapours are continuously withdrawn from the vapour space a pressure difference exists between the limbs of the U chambers. A part of the overflow from chamber U2 falls into a chamber Q into which water flows from chamber U1. The mixture is withdrawn by a pump S and passes it through a valve P3 into the chamber O, in which the solvent is vaporized, leaving an upper layer of oil which is drawn off through a pipe D. If desired the fabric may be carried between two belts B.
