Fats and fatty oils, extracting by solvents.-In a method of degreasing metal and like bodies, the bodies are supported in a container containing a volatile solvent, such as trichlorethylene, which is volatilized by heat, the vapour being condensed by means associated with the detachable lid of the container and dropping in liquid form on to the bodies. The bodies are placed in a perforate basket 2 supported on ledges inside a drum 1 provided with a detachable lid 8 to which a spiral cooling coil 12 is secured. The ends 13, 14 of the coil 12 are connected to a supply of water and a waste pipe. The solvent is volatilized by an external supply of heat. To condense any vapour present after the heating, a cooling coil 3 may be arranged in the lower part of the container 1. In a modification, Fig. 2, the articles are supported on a partition 2<a> in the container 1, a steam heating coil 3<a> to volatilize the solvent is provided in the lower compartment, and the vapour passes through a pipe 23 and an inlet 25 and is condensed by the cooling coil 12, condensed solvent after use being returned by the valved pipe 24 and the pipe 23 to the solvent chamber. A cooling coil 17 is arranged just below the partition 2<a> and is connected by pipes 18, 19 to a supply pipe 21 and a waste pipe 26 to which pipes the ends 13, 14 of the coil are also connected. The apparatus may be used as a rectifier in the form shown in Fig. 1 by replacing the basket 2 by an imperforate container for condensed solvent, or in the form shown in Fig. 2 by closing the valve 24 and collecting the distillate in the upper chamber.
