Abstract

400,353. Paper cartons. WOOD, D., 73, Windsor Avenue, Hillingdon, Middlesex. July 1, 1932, No. 18635. [Classes 18, 66, and 125 (ii).] A frusto-conical or conoidal carton a of paper or like material has an internal step or flange upon which an ordinary cardboard sealing disc may be seated formed by fitting a mandrel b inside the carton body to extend nearly to the mouth of the carton, the rim of which is then curled over inwardly on to the end b<1> of the mandrel to form a hollow beading d which is then pressed against the end of the mandrel to provide a step g with a smooth bore g<1> above it. The rim of the carton may be curled over by one or more grooved rollers c<1> mounted on an arm c<2>, and the seating g is preferably formed by pressing a radially extending disc e down upon the beading d, although one or more smoothing rollers mounted upon a rotary spider may be employed. To secure the bottom of the carton in position the body is set in a sheath h with its rim projecting above the edge of the sheath. A bottom piece with a peripheral skirt is provided by forcing a disc of paper i through a ring die and into the end of the carton, the diameter of the punch being such that the carton body is given an outward step and its end is made substantially cylindrical. A grooved roller e then curls over'the flanges of the carton body and the bottom member on to the disc portion of the bottom member to form a bead a which is also squeezed radially by rollers m, m<1> mounted on pivoted levers m<2>. The closure disc which is inserted into the top end after filling is held in place by turning over the top part of the cylindrical portion g<1> on to the top of the disc. The carton may be proofed by treatment with wax or similar material.
