Abstract
399,800. Treating yarns. HART, O. TUDOR-, 52,-Maida Vale, London. Jan. 11, 1932, No. 748. [Class 120 (iii).] Coir yarn, the fibres of which have been boiled in alkali, is subjected to a rubbing process either before or after weaving, in order to impart flexibility, glossiness and greater affinity for dyes. The alkali treatment may be effected before or after spinning. The yarn may be woven without lubrication, and carpets made therefrom can be made to resemble hair carpets ; it may be used for tying purposes, for example in horticulture where resistance to mould, blight, vermin, and damp is required. The woven material may be printed like linen or cotton. In an example, coir yarn is tied up in hanks, soaked in hot water or wash liquor, and boiled for 2-3 hours under pressure in a solution containing 1“ per cent caustic soda. The yarn is washed in boiling and in cold water, and boiled in a solution containing 1“ per cent alkali, comprising equal parts soda ash and sodium carbonate, with 0.1-0.2 per cent sulphonated soap, and then washed. The yarn may be bleached and treated with acid, and is lustered on a yarn-lustering machine, or after weaving, by rubbing with brushes or bristles of coir, or by passing the yarn over pulleys having V-shaped peripheries faced with coir yarn, and by rubbing with pads faced with coir yarn intermediate the pulleys. The pulleys may move reversely to the direction of travel of the yarn. The yarn may be beaten in a beetling-machine or calendered before or after weaving and may be dyed at any stage after the alkali treatment. Specification 328,638, [Class 120 (iii), Yarns &c.], is referred to.
