Abstract
399,669. Electric discharge tube signs; changing-signs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London. -(Assignees of Patent-Treuhand Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin.) Nov. 25, 1932, No. 33469. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1931. [Classes 3 (i) and 3 (ii).] A sign of the kind in which the inscription is etched on a plate of transparent material illuminated edgewise, comprises a plurality of electric discharge tubes arranged parallel to one another in one or more pairs and one or more plates of glass or like material, having inscriptions etched thereon, adapted to be readily inserted between or removed from any of the pairs of the discharge tubes. As shown, glass plates 1, having letters 2 etched thereon and backed by a dark-coloured plate 3, are illuminated by discharge tubes 6, the electrodes being housed in extensions 7 of boxes 8 housing the transformers &c. Each tube may be enclosed in a non-transparent hood so that no light is received from it except that entering the plates edgewise. Instead of the plate 3, each plate 1 may be provided with a darkcoloured coating on the back. In a modification two sets of glass plates are arranged backto-back with a non-transparent plate therebetween. The tubes may be flashed and adapted to emit light of different colours. The colour of the light emitted by each tube may be varied over its length either by arranging different coloured pieces of glass contiguously along its length or by providing coloured coverings at intervals, or where the tube has a filling of gases and metal vapours, by making the tube of varying cross-section. Each tube may be divided along its length by a helical wall into two chambers provided with electrodes and having different fillings.
