Abstract

399,609. Hydraulic transmission of power ; valves. VICKERS, H. F., 7752, Dubois Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. June 11, 1932, No. 16554. Convention date, June 12, 1931. [Classes 69 (ii) and 135.] The speed of a hydraulically actuated member is controlled by passing the discharge through a regulable orifice, and maintaining constant the pressure difference across said orifice. The controlling device may be positioned, as shown in Fig. 1, in the outlet from a cylinder 21, so as to govern the speed of the piston 22 in one direction only, it may be arranged in the outlet, as shown in Fig. 5, to govern the piston speed in both directions, or it may be on the inlet side, as shown in Fig. 6. The device comprises an adjustable throttle valve 6, having a chamber 4 in front of it, supplied from a chamber 3 under the control of a valve 5. The latter is acted on by a spring 11, and is carried by a piston 9, one face of which is acted by pressure from the chamber 4 through a conduit 13 and the other by pressure conveyed through a conduit 15 from behind the throttle valve. The diameter of the valve stem at 10 may be equal to the effective diameter of the valve 5 ; it may be greater or less than that of the valve when it is desired to vary the speed with increase of load, or to compensate for slip in the actuated member, The effective diameter of the valve may be varied by using seats or valve heads of different sizes.
