[Class 30.] The blade 10 of a safety razor is reciprocated longitudinally by an eccentric pin 27 on the end of a shaft 15 enclosed in the e tubular handle 1 and rotated by frictionallv engaging a knurled part 25 of it, exposed by a cut-out 26 of the tubular handle, and kept rotating, for shaving periods of from five to ten minutes only, by the kinetic energy of a flywheel 24 secured to the lower end of the shaft. The shaft may be set in motion by drawing the razor rapidly over a cord or strip of rubber engaging the knurled shaft-part 25. In the modification, shown in Fig. 4, the exposed part of the shaft 15a carries a pinion meshing with a wheel 43 journalled in lugs on the handle and rotated by drawing it over the hand or a strop. In both forms, the shaft 15 is journalled at it upper end in a bushing 17 having bevelled sides to reduce its bearing area, and at its lower end it is reduced to form a pin bearing in a bushing 20 in a cap 21 which screws on to the enlarged flywheel-housing. The handle 1 rigidly or integrally carries a guard-plate 3 having guideposts 12 slidably engaging end-notches 14 in the blade 10. The blade is retained on raised seating-ridges 8, 9, along the rear and front edges of the guard, by a clamping-plate 4 pivoted along on'e end 5 and secured to the guard at the other end by suitable means, not described. The eccentric pin 27 engages a transverse central slot 28 in the blade.
