Abstract

398,494. Gas water-heaters ; burners. PATTISON, C. M. and AUTOCONTROL BOILERS, Ltd., Victoria Station House, London. March 4, 1932, No. 6547. [Classes 75 (i), 75 (iii), and 126.] Baffles; burners, regulating; lighting burners. -In a water-heater, gas is burnt in a combustion chamber containing refractory material 2 and the products are drawn downwardly through heat-exchange means comprising superposed baffle-plates 19, each of which provides two or more passages for the gases in staggered relation to those in adjacent plates. Fig. 2 shows a construction in which each baffle is in two portions 29, 30, shaped to form the apertures 20 between them. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, each baffle comprises two segmental parts integral with the walls of the flue, the diametral gaps 22 being at right-angles to one another in adjacent baffles and being divided into two apertures by a square rod or plug 23 passing through the series of baffles. Fig. 6 shows a somewhat similar construction in which the slots 34 do not extend wholly across the baffle-plates. On starting the apparatus, the suction produced by an exhaust fan 6 operates on a flexible diaphragm 11 and causes it to open the main gas valve 15 and to turn the valve 17 controlling the pilot jet to fully open position. When the water reaches a predetermined temperature a thermostat 9 opens the circuit of the fan motor, the diaphragm 11 then allowing the valve 15 to close and the valve 17 to reduce the gas supply to the pilot jet. The pressure operated diaphragm may be replaced by other devices, such as a solenoid in a circuit controlled by the thermostat ; or the thermostat may control mechanically the gas supplies and the starting of a prime mover which operates the fan.
