Abstract

398,041. Exercising-apparatus. KEMPSON, A. H., 36, Bennetts Hill, Birmingham. Oct. 13, 1932, No. 28538. [Class 132 (i).] Exercising-apparatus of the kind comprising a frame provided with a seat, a handlebar, a crank axle, and adjustable braking means is characterized in that the frame is constructed to resemble a cycle frame and includes front and rear supporting members resting on the ground, the frame carrying the saddle, handlebar and crank axle in substantially ordinary positions, the apparatus also including a back axle supported on the rear part of the frame and driven from the crank axle. As shown, the apparatus comprises a cycle frame A having front and rear supports 1, 2 having rubber feet 3 and dummy wheels 4, and provided with a crank axle 8 having pedal cranks 9 on which is a sprocket 15 connected by the chain 16 to the rear sprocket 17 on the rear hub 18. On the hub 18 is a peripherally grooved disc 20 round which passes a flexible band 22 the ends of which are clipped together and connected by a tension spring 26 to one end of a wire cable 28 operated from the handlebar bv a lever 31. In a modification the hub is provided with a pair of rings attached by springs to a cross-bar vertically slidable on the rear tubes and operated by a wire cable. The hub may be above or below the cross-bar. A hand- or foot-lever connected to the springs by links or the like may replace the wire cable. The sections of the apparatus may be detachable.
