Abstract

397,917. Inflating-valves. A V O N INDIA RUBBER CO., Ltd., Melksham, and SWANBOROUGH, O. F., Withleigh, Melksham, Wiltshire. March 3, 1932, No. 6447. [Class 135.] An inflating-valve for a football bladder or air-cushion comprises an inner core a, of metal or rubber, having an internal constriction d to grip an inflator and surrounded by an extensible thin rubber sheath f, both the core and sheath having flanges c, f<1> secured together and to the bladder k by rubber cement, with or without a strengthening ring q. The core has an orifice e, preferably with a bead o against which the sheath, which has openings g, is held by internal pressure. The core, which may be closed at its outer end by a rubber plug p, has an outer flange b which lies outside the casing of the football. The internal diameter of the core may taper inwards and have a number of constrictions such as d to permit use of more than one type of inflator. In a modification, the core has a smooth exterior without the bead o, the sheath then having a thickened and flattened bottom. Each valve part is moulded and vulcanized and the rubber may contain 90 per cent rubber, a small amount of filler and sufficient sulphur and accelerator to effect vulcanization. Colouring matter may be added if desired. Fig. 10 shows a deflating tool comprising a hollow stem r with a ball end to pass through the inner core orifice. Alternatively a half-round section round-ended metal rod may be used as a deflator. The provisional Specification refers also to the application of the invention to beach-balls and to the shaping of the lip to facilitate inflation by the mouth.
