[Class 123 (i).] In a device for maintaining a constant liquid-level, acting on the bird-fountain principle, a filling chamber 11, airtight reservoir 12 and constant level chamber 13 are arranged in superposed relation, the chamber 13 being connected to other reservoirs in which a constant level is required, e.g. the bearings in a traction motor. A 3-way cock 16 is connected by pipes 15, 17, 18 to the bottom of the chambers 12, 13, 11 respectively, and is adapted to connect the pipes 15, 17 or 15, 18 or 17, 18. In normal use the first connection is made and liquid is supplied to chamber 13 from chamber 12, the level being determined by the lower end of the vent pipe 19. The chamber 12 is filled from chamber 11 by connecting the pipes 15, 18 and an emergency supply of liquid can be delivered to the chamber 13 direct from chamber 11 by connecting the pipes 17, 18. The lower end of pipe 19 may simply terminate at the desired level, or it may terminate in a bell 20 having an inner bell 21 open to the air through pipes 23, preferably terminating at the same level as the bell 21. The surface which seals the vent is thus confined to a small area and errors due to disturbance of the liquid are minimized.
