Abstract
397,069. Starting prime movers. SULZER FR’RES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. April 5, 1933, No. 10190. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1932. [Class 38 (iv).] In an electric starter for a liquid-cooled engine 2, the level of the liquid in the cooling- system is employed to determine whether the starting motor shall be operative or inoperative, and means may be employed for indicating when the motor is inoperative. As shown, the cooling-system comprises a low-level tank 4 from which the liquid is circulated by a pump 5 through the cylinder jackets to a high-level tank 9 having an overflow 24 connected by a pipe 10 to the radiator 11. A generator 3 serves as a starting motor and is connected to a battery circuit 16 provided with a starting switch 18 and with a relay switch 25, the circuit 19 of which is normally closed at 26 by a contact carried by a float 20 in the tank 9. The circuit 19 also includes a main control switch 30, so that the closing of the switches 18, 30 normally effects starting. When the tank 9 is empty, however, the contact 26 breaks the circuit 19 and closes contacts in the circuit 21 of an indicating lamp 22 so that the closing of the switches 18, 30 then illuminates the lamp instead of supplying current to the motor 3.
