396,574. Printing-machines. CROWLEY, H. F., 25, Belmont Road, Ilford, Essex. Sept. 30, 1932, No. 27191. [Class 100 (ii).] An inking - roller serving also as an ink container is made of pottery, natural stone, or like porous material, or of segmental pieces of wood held together by y interengaging tongues or dowel strips, to provide a rigid inking- surface. The cylinder wall b and impermeable side walls a enclose a chamber c, which has a normally-plugged filling aperture d. In the case of a long roller, internal webs or partitions may be furnished, or a number of separate short rollers may be interchangeably mounted side by side on a common spindle e and held thereon by a collar f and a nut g. The separate rollers or partitions may be filled with differently coloured inks and a thin layer of impervious material h may be inserted to prevent intermingling of the inks. The wall b of each roller, when made of wood, is built up of segments held concentric with the spindle by interengaging tongues j and grooves k, the parts being held together by screws l, and the segments united circumferentially by interengaging tongues and grooves or by dowel strips. In a modification, the partitions are formed by radial longitudinal ribs, which also serve to support the segments of the cylinder wall.
