Abstract

396,307. Gas by-pass valves. DEMPSTER, Ltd., R. & J. and HULME, W. A., Gas Plant Works, Oldham Road, Manchester. Feb. 4, 1933, No. 3456. [Classes 54 and 135.] A hydraulic by-pass valve for use with gasholders, washers, purifiers, &c. of the kind comprising an outer casing 1 having a gas inlet 6 and a gas outlet 7 and an incomplete dividing partition 17 below which gas is byepassed, and means for withdrawing liquid from the casing 1, has on each side of the said partition 17 a pair of passages or spaces incompletely divided from each other which operate as seals when provided with liquid. Gas entering at 6 passes through the spaces 2, 3 to the inlet 8 of the gas apparatus and from the outlet 9 of the apparatus through spaces 4, 5 to the outlet 7, byepassing being prevented by filling the space below the partition with liquid from a pipe 13 controlled by a valve 14. To byepass the gas, the liquid in the outer casing 1 is withdrawn by a pipe 15 and liquid is supplied to the inner trough 10 by a pipe 11 having a valve 12. The trough 10 has valve-controlled outlets 16. An inverted form of apparatus has the inlet 8 and outlet 9 below the casing 1 and connected to syphon-like members which extend across the casing, dividing the bottom of the casing into three parts, the liquid level in which is separately controllable by hand-valves. Byepassing takes place between the syphon members and under the dividing partition which, as in the first form, does not extend to the bottom of the casing.
