Abstract

396,280. Straight-bar knitting- machines. WILDMAN MFG. CO., Norristown, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Howie, K. ; Norristown, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Dec. 23,.1932, No. 36518. Convention date, March 3. [Class 74 (ii).] A full-fashioned knitting-machine is provided with a picot bar 1 movable either to idle position away from the needles or into working position. The bar is operable longitudinally by one of the narrowing point carriers. While narrowing is performed the picot bar is in its upper position. The movement of the narrowing point carrier is recuced when the picot bar is in operation. The adjusting means for yarn carrier stops is thrown out of operation while picot is being formed. The picot bar 1 is adjusted to operative position by swinging it down from an elevated position by hand so that its transfer points 1a stand over and in line with alternate needles. The rock shaft 2 carrying the bar 1 is journalled in bearings 4 in the vertically swinging fashioning frame 47. The bar 1 is held down in working position by engagement of a clutch collar on the end of shaft 2 with a clutch on the bearing 4. The clutch has teeth of such length that the shaft 2 and bar 1 have sufficient limited length-wise movement, without disengagement, to transfer the picot loops. This transference is effected in the same general way as in narrowing by pawl and ratchet mechanism 45, 46. To hold the pawl 46 out of the path of ratchet 45 a cam 24a on the yarn change shaft b acts on a spring pin 32 carried on a link 33 connected to the pawl 46. When the ratchet descends the pawl 46 is freed and is caused by the pin 32 &c. to stand away from the ratchet in its upward movement. A second cam surface 24b keeps pawl 43k from turning shaft 43 which controls the yarn carrier stop mechanism at this time. The screw shait 18 is operated by hand to set the narrowing points to idle position out beyond the ends of the bar 1 and is automatically reciprocated for picot work sufficient to displace the narrowing point carrier and bar 1 one needle space. After formation of the picot the narrowing points are moved inwardly from their outward positions beyond the ends of the picot bar, into position for narrowing.
