Abstract
396,162. Door-closing and check devices ; holders ; hinges. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Ellison Bronze Co., Inc. ; Jamestown, New York, U.S.A.) March 31, 1932, No. 9266. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] A pivoted sliding door is supported for turning movement on hinge arms at the top, bottom, or top and bottom of the door and turns also about a pivot axis which is closer to the centre of the door than the point of the support of the arms, and is provided with spring means tending always to return it to the closed position. In the form shown, the door 20, Figs. 1 and 3, is connected by upper and lower arms 27, 28 to a vertical tubular hinge 26, and is provided at its upper edge with a roller 103 which engages in a channel 82 in the door frame. The hinge is mounted within a hollow mullion 25 which at its lower end is secured to a gear box 32, Fig. 7, mounted on the floor 23. The arms are formed in two parts which may be fixed together with varying overlap to suit different sizes of door. The arm 28 is formed with a collar 30 which fits within the hinge to which it is brazed or welded. The gear box 32 is recessed at 36 to form a journal for the hub 35 of a gear wheel 34 which is held in position by a plate 37. The counterbored upper face of the gear wheel is notched at 41 to receive a key 40 which passes through the slotted base of a stud 44. This stud is secured by a pin 48 to a shaft 46 revolubly mounted in the collar 30 of the arm 28. The upper end of the shaft is slotted at 54 to receive one end of a spring 52, the other end of which is secured to the hinge 26 by a pin 57. The rotation of the arm 28, and thence the hinge 26, upon opening the door produces a stress in the spring which thereby tends to return the door to its closed position. Ball bearings 31 are arranged between the lower face of the collar 30 and the stud 44, oil being supplied to the bearing through holes 63. The gear wheel is maintained in the required angular position by a spring-pressed pawl and can be rotated, to effect an alteration in the initial stress of the spring 52, by means of a second manuallyoperable gear wheel which meshes therewith. The position of the door with respect to the floor can be adjusted by the use of packing pieces 64 located between the stud 44 and the wheel 34. The arm is connected to the door through a pin-and-socket joint comprising a pin 90 which is secured to a bracket 91 on the door, and a cup 87 freely mounted on a hardened disc 86 within the cup-shaped end 85 of the arm. The upper arm 27 is formed with a collar 78, Fig. 4, which is welded or brazed to the hinge 26, and through this collar passes an axially movable pin 76, having set-screws 80 which engage in a vertical slot 79 in the hinge. By removing the lower set-screw the pin can be lowered to enable the door to be removed completely from its frame. In the raised position, the pin engages in a. bearing 81 located in a channel bracket 82 which is mounted in the cornice 24 of the fixed frame. The outer end of the arm 27 fits over the square end of a shaft 99 which is in axial alignment with the pin 90. To this shaft is secured a pinion 126, Fig. 10, which meshes with the teeth 125 of a piston 124 which reciprocates in a cylinder 120. Upon opening the door the piston is moved towards the cylinder head 122, its movement in the final stages being resisted by a spring 123 which thereby stores energy to return the door to the closed position. The cylinder, and the casing 140 in which it is mounted, are filled with a fluid such as oil or glycerine which is forced from one end of the cylinder to the other when the piston is in motion. The piston is slotted at 131 along its lower edge and this slot communicates with a hole 132 and ball valve 135 in the piston head 127. During the opening of the door, the valve opens and the fluid passes freely from the head 122 to the end 133. On the return movement, the ball is forced firmly against its seat and the fluid passes through a needle valve 158 and a ball valve both of which communicate with a duct 154 leading to the end 122 of the cylinder. The rate at which the door closes can be regulated by adjusting the position of the needle valve. An extension 143 of the casing 140 carries the roller 103 and through this extension screws 144 are passed to secure the casing to the door. The door is retained in the open position by a pivoted holder 107 which is mounted within the channel 82. This holder is retained either in the operative or inoperative position by a spring-pressed ball 110 which engages in recesses 114 in the holder. In a modified arrangement, the spring 52 is omitted and a pin carried by the arm 28 and welded to the hinge rests in an adjustable cup-shaped bearing screw-threaded in a bracket secured to the floor. In this construction, the spring 123 of the checking device is in constant engagement with the piston 124 and thereby returns the door from the open to the closed position.
