The cylinder is formed with a. vertical chamber C having a reduced lower end C and a tapered seat C between the chamber C and reduced portion C and leading from this reduced portion O is a passage G coinmunicating with the cylinder forward of the piston. A passage 0" communicates with the tube L and thereby establishes com'n'iunication between the chamber C and the rear side of the piston.
Located in the chamber C is a'valve pin M having a tapered end M at its lower end adapted to cooperate with the seat C to regulate the passage of fluid therethrough, the upper end of the pin being threaded as shown at M and working through a collar or plug M screwed into the upper end of the chamber C there being interposed a packing M to prevent leakage. I
'There is an opening A in the cover plate A to permit the adjustment of the regulating pin or valve, said pin or valve being provided at its upper end with a slot for the reception of ascrew driver or other tool for the purpose of adjustment.
The piston also has a longitudinal passage N reduced at its rear end and providing a valve seat N against. which the ball valve N seats during the forward movement of the piston, this ball valve being held in place by means of a. pin N exacross the forward end of the passage N.
It will thus be seen that there is pro vided a double check, one carried by the piston and the other by the cylinder, the latter being adjustable to regulate the passage of fluid therethrough. In practice it is preferred to employ oil as the fluid controlling medium but it will, of course, be fluid can be employed, and in this connection air will be considered a fluid for such purposes in case it should be desired to dispense with a liquid controlling medium.
A leather washer X is placed between the screw cover B and the casting and I also employ a leather washer Y and disk Z surrounding the pintle where it passes out of the screw cover, these washers being emthe escape of oil or other checking liquid.
As'the door is swung ineither direction, the yoke will be forced rearwardly drawing with it the piston. During these movements fluid will ton head both through the check valve and the central tube L, but upon the return movement, the check valve will seat to prepass through the pisthe dooris moved in either direction.
In operation the outer casing is 'lirst positioned in the floor and the hollow casting with cylinder connected thereto is arranged within the outer casing and thecover plate A is then securely fastened in place flush with the floor. The door to which the bar D has been attached is then positioned upon the pintle D and cross pin D vand the door is properly centered by means of the adjusting screws D in order to maintain the lower end of the door in the proper relative position with reference to the com: bined hinge and check.
At the upper end of the door there is placed a pintle socket 0 into which fits the upper pintle P, this pintle being-arranged in the socket Q, arranged at the top of the door frame, this socket being slotted as shown at Q/ topermit the movement of vthe adjusting finger R fitting into the upper end passage of fluid at that point thereof the pintle P and provided with, a thread edopening at its other end in which works a screw S thehead of whichis countersunk in the plate portion of the upper socket. This screw is held against vertical movement by means of a washer S, said Washer holds the screw against vertical movement but permits rotation.
In operation the socketQ is inserted in the door frame and the pintle P is drawn upwardly by turningthe screw S, ,moving the finger R upwardly, withdrawing the pintle into the socket. Thesocket-portion 0 having been previously positioned in the top of the door D, P, and whilethe door is turned :to a position at right angles, the screw S is turned in the reverse direction, bringing the pintle P downwardly into the socket O. 7 It will thus be seen that weprovide .asimple construction of adjustable pintle for the upper end of the door as well .asa simple and eflicient hinge. and check for the lower end of t-he'door.
Having thus described .our invention, what we claim is,:.- I
1. In a combined hinge and check, the combination with a hollow casting and cylinder connected thereto, of a'pintle journaled is moved beneath the. pintle thereto, a yoke provided with rollers arranged for engagement with the cam and whereby the yoke is moved as the pintle turns, a piston movable in the cylinder and pivotally connected to the forward end of the yoke, a coil spring arranged in the cylinder and engaging the piston, a check valve arranged in a passage in the piston, a chamber at the'forward end of'the cylinder, an,
adjustable valve arranged in said chamber, said chamber having two outlets, and a tube communicatingwith one of said outlets and arranged centrally of the piston.
2. In a combined hinge and combination with a hollow casting and a cylinder connected thereto, of a pintle journaled in the hollow casting and having a cam rigidly connected thereto, a longitudinally slotted yoke having rollers arranged for engagement with the cam and whereby the yoke is moved longitudinally as the pintle rotates, a piston pivotally connected'to,
the forward end of the yoke and reciprocating in the cylinder, said piston having a central bore and likewise a passage adjacent one side, a check valve located in said passage,
