[Class 145 (ii).] In making a comb, teeth are cut on a blank 18 by a series of parallel circular saws 100, Fig. 17, these being spaced apart on the shaft 101 by elastic washers. The blank 18 is held between sets of parallel plates 3, 3a, these also forming guides for the cutters. The guides 3a are pivoted to the frame 93 and pressed on to the blank by the spring 120. The work is reciprocated to and from the saws by the cam 116. In a modification the cutters are formed as inclined saws or knives 9, Fig. 1, these being reciprocated vertically by the crank 66 and guided by plates 3, 3a, the blank 18 being held stationary by these plates. The knives may be formed to cut straight, tapered or wavy teeth 31. The knives may also be formed with inclined edges, Fig. 10. In a further modification the interdental spaces are formed by punches 19 passing between guides 3, 3a, Fig. 25, the extension 10 being continually in engagement with the lower guides during reciprocation. Elastic plates 4, 4a allow slight adjustment of the spacing of the guides.
