Abstract

395,494. Spray carburetters. DODSON, E., 66, Lewin Road, Streatham, London. June 2, 1932, Nos. 15636/32 and 2272/33. [Class 7 (iii).] Supercharged or high compression-ratio aircraft engines having a carburetter fitted with a power jet adapted to come into action at full throttle opening, for example as described in Specifications 125,687 and 138,177, [both in Class 7 (iii), Internal-combustion engines, Carburetting-apparatus &c. for], are provided with means for varying the throttle opening at which the power jet comes into action according to the altitude. A valve h<11>, Fig. 1, controlling the power jet is opened by connections h<8>, h<9>, h<10> to a spindle h<7> mounted in a control box a, inside which the spindle h<7> is connected by links h<5>, h<6>, Fig. 3, to a lever h carried by a floating pivot h<13> and connected at its other end by a link b<10> to the throttleactuating mechanism comprising a lever b<7> pivoted at b<8> and connected by linkwork b<4>, b<5> to a spindle b, which has an arm b<1> outside the control box connected by a link b<2> to the pilot's throttle-control lever b<3>. The link b<10> is also connected to an arm on another spindle b<12> carrying outside the control box an arm b<13> connected by a link b<14> to the throttle c. Hence actuation of the throttle also operates the lever h and spindle h<7> to control the power jet. The amount of throttle opening at which the power jet comes into action is varied by mounting the floating pivot h<13> in a cam slot e<7> formed in a sector e<8> carried by a spindle e, which is adjusted according to altitude either automatically or by the pilot's control e<3> of a valve f controlling the proportion of fuel and air and connected by links e<4>, e<5>, e<6> to the spindle e. The pivot b<8> of the lever b<7> is also mounted in a floating manner in an arm carried by a spindle d<1> which is adjusted according to altitude by a boost control unit d<4> such as those described in Specifications 358,289 and 356,410. The power-jet timing may also be varied automatically by means for adjusting the ignition timing in accordance with altitude, for example as described in Specification 378,182. Specifications 291,152, 306,587, [both in Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for], and 376,341 also are referred to.
