[Class 145 (ii).] Feed motions.-A saw-mill. in which the work is repeatedly fed past the saw so as to cut off a number of boards, has a return feed for the work after it has been cut, and means for guiding the work from the return feed on to the forward feed again. The billet B, Fig. 3, is fed to the saw S, which may be a circular saw or band saw, by an endless chain conveyer 9, the billet being held against a fence 7 by spring members 16. The slat being cut off is held against the saw by spring members 25, and when severed is deflected from the machine by a member 28 to which it is fed by the following billet. The remainder of the billet is deflected by a member 29 and after inspection is placed by the operator on the return feed 8, being held against a fence 8a by springs 17. The billet is guided by spring arms 19, 20 carried by the fence 8a on to the forward feed 9 to be returned to the saw. A vertical roller 18 supports the outer face of the billet during this transference. The return feed 8 comprises an endless chain to which are pivoted L-shaped arms 22 ; their free ends 22a are guided in a groove in the member 15 which carries the spring arms 16, 17 and roller 18, the latter being grooved to permit their passage ; the short limbs of the arms 22 are in contact with a guide-plate 23, Fig. 4, which is interrupted at 23a to allow the arms 22 to clear the deflected billet. The return feed is driven at a greater speed than the forward feed, to recover time spent in inspection of the billet.
