393,211. Alternating-current induction motors. BARBER-COLMAN CO., River Street, Rackford, Illinois, U.S.A. Dec. 16, 1932, No. 35731. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1931. [Class 35.] Polepieces; field magnets, dampers on poles of.-In a motor of the type having a squirrel-cage rotor 10 and a shaded pole stator 5 the unshaded portions 18 being provided with magnetic extensions 19 which substantially enclose the rotor, the portions 21 of the magnetic extensions adjacent to the shaded tips 20 of the stator poles have a smaller cross sectional area than the portions 22 adjacent to the unshaded tips 18. The stator core is of the type in which the winding 6 encloses the entire section of the magnetic circuit through the poles. Each pole is provided with two shading rings 12, one enclosing a greater cross section of the pole than the other. The part 22 of each extension tapers towards the median plane 17, and the part 21, which is preferably integral with the adjacent pole, is of uniform section. To diminish leakage of flux, a high reluctance portion such as a hole 25 is provided in the part 19 and the shading rings are constructed to have low resistance. In a motor of the preferred size the stator is two inches wide, three inches long, and three-fourths of an inch thick, and the winding 6 has five hundred ampere-turns.
