393,005. Lathes; drilling-machines. KALABIN, N., Zweite Linie, Haus 15, Wohnung 15, Leningrad. Jan. 7, 1932, No. 543. [Class 83 (iii).] Drills; mandrels.-In a lathe for making bobbins from wooden blanks, the blanks are received in peripheral notches in a continuously rotating drum, in which they are first drilled axially whilst prevented from rotating and next are turned by rotary cutters whilst being rotated. The blanks 17 are delivered by shoots 8 to notches in the periphery of a drum 34 which is rotated through gearing b, c, from a central shaft driving 31. A toothed chain 161 passes over pulleys 15 and encircles the upper portion of the drum to hold the blanks therein and prevent them from rotating on their axes whilst being drilled. The drills 20, which are also carried by the drum, are rotated on their axes by gearing 32<1> driven from the shaft 31 and the blanks are fed thereon by hollow plungers 18 engaging an annular stationary cam 19. When the blanks have been drilled they leave the chain 16<1> and are pushed on to the. serrated shanks 21 of the drills so as to be rotated thereby whilst they pass rotary cutters 16 to be shaped as shown at 24, Fig. 1. The cutters 16 are arranged progressively nearer the axis of the drum to effect the turning in stages and are mounted in blocks carried by the stationary frame of the machine so as to be radially and axially adjustable. The cutters are rotated by flexible shafts 25 and friction gearing 33 which is maintained in engagement by the springs shown. The drills may also be driven by similar friction gearing. After turning, the bobbins are removed from the drills by plates 27 connected to slides 28 operated by a stationary annular cam 30 and are delivered to a shoot 14, Fig. 2. The machine is arranged to carry blanks on each side of the drills, as shown in Fig. 1. Shavings are removed from the machine by suction through apertures 35.
