Abstract

710,868. Folding paper. CAMCO (MACHINERY), Ltd. April 7, 1952 [April 11, 1951], No. 8435/51. Class 100 (1) A paper sheet folding and slitting machine comprises cutters 27, Fig. 4, for cutting an initially folded sheet into two or more separate sections, e.g. 18a, 18b, along a line 13, Fig. 2, or line at right angles to the last folded edge 15, a plurality of sheet turning devices 41a, 41b, one for each separated sheet, by which such sheet section is turned through 90 degrees and a folder 69 for making a fold in each of the separated sections subsequent to turning in a direction parallel to the edge which was cut at the previous slitting operation. Sheets 10, Figs. 3 and 4, fed in the direction x.by conveyer 24, are folded by a device 23 and slit into two parts by the rotary cutters 27. The separated sheets 18a, 18b are then conveyed over a table 37 by means of conveyer 32 to turning device 41a, 41b which may be as described in Specification 336,561, [Class 100 (ii)], comprising gripping discs 44, 45 mounted for rotation with a spmdle 42 which is itself rotated by a rack bar 51 oscillated from a cam 56 and engaging a pinion 49 on a sleeve 41 on the spindle 42. To grip the sheets the disc 44 is raised by a bellcrank lever 63, one end of which is oscillated through rod 65 by a cam 67 and the other end of which acts on a collar 61 fast to the sleeve 43, axially slidable on the spindle 42 and carrying at its upper end the disc 44. The cams 56, 67 operate the turning devices in timed relation to the feeding of the sheet, the device 41a being operated before the device 41b so as to avoid fouling of the edges of the separated sheet section 18a, 18b. Alternatively the device 41a, 41b may be staggered transversely with respect to each other, Fig. 6 (not shown). The device 41a, 41b may also be mounted for transverse adjustment the cam 56 being then made large enough to take up the desired range of adjustment, Fig. 8 (not shown). After being turned the sheets are subjected to a second folding operation by the device 69, each separated section then being provided with a folded end section 17, Fig. 2. The folding units 23, 69 may alternatively be of the buckle folding type. The turning devices 41 may all be turned, e.g. when there are four, Fig. 6b (not shown), by providing one of them with a rack and pinion arrangement the remainder being interconnected by a sprocket chain running over sprockets provided on the sleeve 43 and over a sprocket of the device operated by the rock mechanism. The lifting device for the lower disc 44 may be pair of parallel bars running transversely of the direction of feed of the sheets and acting against abutments on the sleeve 43, the bars being listed by a single cam mechanism oscillating a single rod carrying a plurality of levers for lifting the bars. Alternatively the single rod may carry a number of levers each of which bears against the collar 61. The levers may be adjustable along the rod to allow for transverse adjustment of the turning device.
