machines of that class known as automatic or multiple spindle screw machines, the object of the invention being to provlde a machine of this class having improved means for revolving or indexing the work spindle turret at a rapid of accelerated speed, whereby the production of the machine is matcrially increased.
A further object of the invention is the provision, in a multiple spindle screw machine, of a two-part driving or cam shaft, said shafts carrylng mechanism whereby the rotation of one will be controlled by the other and whereby one shaft may remain idle during a predetermined period while the other is rotating and will have increased speed as compared with the other during an other predetermined period, thereby to index the turret rapidly.
In the drawings accompanyin ing part of this specification, Figure l is a top plan View of a machine of the class described having this improved drii'ing means; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with parts in section; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the revolublc turret and the driving mechanism for indexing the same; Fig. 4 is an end view of the machine looking from right to left in Fig. 1; and Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate details of v a part of the mechanism for imparting rotation from one shaft to the other thereby to control the indexing of the turret.

The present improved machine. in the cmbodiment shown, comprises a suitable supporting frame or bed 2 having mounted thereon a turret casing 3, within which is located a rotary work spindle turret or cylinder 4, which may carry any desired number of work spindles 5, four of which are shown herein. Each of these work spindles is providcd with the usual clutch 6 and a gear 7 in mesh with agear 8 located on the end of Specification of Letters Patent.

the work spindle driving shaft 9, which passes through and is rotatable, within the turret 4 and by means of which rotary movement is imparted to the rotary work spindles mounted within the turret. This shaft. passes through the usual sliding tool head 10 and maybe supported at its opposite end by a. suitable bearing in a bracket 11 secured to the bed of the machine. This shaft S) may be-driven in any suitable manner, but a conventional form of"dri.ving means is shown herein, consisting of a bevel gear 12 fixed to the end of the shaft and in mesh with a bevel gear 13 fixed to a transverse shaft 14. carrying at its end a gear 15 in mesh with another gear 16 mounted on a sleeve 17 suitably supported on a stud 17 and on the end of which sleeve 17 is a sprocket gear 18 for the reception of a sprocket chain 19 running to a sprocket gear 20 carried on the end of a worm shaft 21, which latter shaft constitutes the means for rotating the turret driving or cam shaft, this worm shaftbeing suitably supported on the base of the machine. Of course it will be understood that any desired means for driving the work spindle shaft, and thereby the work spindles, may be used.
In mesh with the Worm of the worm shaft 21 is a worm wheel 22 fixed to a tubular shaft 23 suitably supported on the bed of the machine, and on the end of the worm shaft 21 is located a driving pulley 94 connected with any suitable source of power, as for instance by means of a belt. This tubular shaft 23 will in practice carry a cam drum 25, which carries the usual cams 26 for sliding the tool head towardand from the turret and will also carry such other cams as may be necessary for actuating certain. parts of the mccl'ianism, as for instance the cutting off tools. Intending through this tubular shaft 23 is a shaft 27, the rear end of which is suitably supported or housed in the bed of the machine and carries the usual cam drum 2? for opcrating thc clutchcs in the well known manner. This shaft 27 also carries a fan gear 29 in mesh with a gear 30 fixed to the rotary turret and by means of which the turret is indexed at predetermined intervals. This shaft 27, therefore, intermediate the indexing of the turret, is intended to remain stationary while the tubular shaft 23 is intended to constantly rotate through the medium ot the worm shaft 2i and the worm wheel fixed to this tubular shaft 3 3.
For rotating the shaft 27 at; the proper time suitable in -elmui- :ui is provided. in the present in tance this consists of a sprocket wheel 31 iixed to the end of the worm shaft 21 for the reception of a sprocket chain 32 running to a sprocket wheel 33 fixed on the end of ant-ther worm shaft 34-, the worm 35 of which is in mesh with a worm wheel 36 loosely mounted on the tubular shaft 23.

The ratio of the two Splfltiifil'fl 31 and is three to one in the presentembodiment oi the machine, so that the worm wheel 36, which as stated is loose upon the tubular shaft, is driven, uninterruptedly three times as fast as the worm wheel 22, which is fixed to the tubular shaft. Located on that end of the shaft 27 nearest. the worm wheet 36 is a clutch disk 39 haw ing a plurality of recesses or notches 40 therein, shown herein as three innumber. this disk being keyed to the shaft 27 for rotation therewith, the recesses 40 being lo catcd to receive the pawl 38 at. certain perim'is. From this it will, be observed that. when the pawl extends into any one of the recesses motion will be imparted from the worm Wheel 36 loose upon the tubular shaft 23, and the pawl disk 37, to the clutch disk 39 keyed to the shaft 27, whereupon the latter will he rotated to bring the fan gear into engagement with the teeth of the gear and so rotate or index the turret so loin: as the fan gear is in mesh with such teeth. and that, the ratio of the sprockets 31 and 323 three to one, it follows that the shaft 37 will be rotated at the intervals referred to three times as fast the tubular Shaft thus rapidly indexing the turret and thereby saving considerable loss of time in the operation of the machine and consequently inr'rreasing the output or product of such machine. Keyed to the tubular shaft .23 is a can di k 41 having three camthing or tripping nations 4? for successively engaging the pawl 38 and shifting it against the action of its spring out of the recesses of the clutch disk 39. at which time furthe rotation of the shaft: 27 ceases.
From the foregoing it will be observed that when power is applied to the driving pulley 2- on the worm shaft 21 this worm drives the main drive worm wheel 22 kevcd to the tubular shaft 23, driving the pawl releasing cam 4-1 at the same speed, while at th: same time it rotates the sprockets 31 and 17, and thereby the worm wheel 36 and the pawl disk 37 in the manner hercinbefore stated. so that when the pawl 38 enters a i'iotch of the clutch disk 39, which is as hereinbefore stated keyed to the shaft 27 this shaft is rotated at a speed of three to one of the tubular shaft 23 and continues to run at that speed until the pawl is brought into engage ment with one of the cam faces 42 of the cam 4E1, whereupon the pawl is disengaged from, the clutch disk 39 thereby allowing the shaft 27 to stop until such pawl again on gages a suoceedinp; notch, and so on. These successive operations are performed three times in one complete revolution of the shaft. At the end of one complete revolution of this tubular shaft the shaft 27 will have made one complete rotation, although the speed thereof during such intermittent rotation is, as hereinbefore stated. considerably greater than the speed of the tuhnlar shaft. Thus it will be observed that at three distinct periods the shaft 27 is running three to one times as fast as the tutor lar shaft.
In practice the cams of the cam drum 253 may he so formed as to give the desired slow movement to the tool head during the cut ting or working operations of the tools and intermediate thereof the desired rapid movement to retard and return the tool head. into its working position.
From the foregoing it will he observed that the tubular shaft 23 is rotated at a uniform speed continuously, while the shaft If intermittently rotated, but at considen ahly greater speed than the tuhular shaft 23. so that the turret is rapidly indexed, and much more so than if the tubular shaft constituted the means for imparting rotary movement to the turret.

A machine of the class described having a pair of shafts, one continuously rotatable and the other intermittently rotatable but at a higher speed than the other, means for rotating the continuously rotatablo shaft and for rotating the intermittently rotatable shaft and comprising two sets of worm and worm wheel gearing, the Worm Wheel of both setsearried by one of said shafts, and means intermittently connecting one of said sets of Worm Wheel gearing with the intermittently rotatable shaft.

A machine of the class described having a pair of shafts, one'continmmsly rota-- table and the other intermittently rotatable but. at a higher speed than the other, means for rotating the continuously rotatable shaft and for rotating the intermittently rotatable shaft and comprising two sets of worm and orm wheel gearing, the worm wheel of both -et.-; carried by the continuously rotatable ha it one loosely mounted relatively thereto, and means intermittently connecting one of Mill sets of worm Wheel gearing with the intermittently rotatable shaft.

16. in a machine of the class described, the combination of a rotary turret having plurality of work carrying spindles, and means for indexing the turret at a rapid speed and comprising a pair of shafts one extending into the other, one continuously rotatable and the other intermittently rotatabl but at an increased speed as compared with the speed of the continuously rotatable shaft, means for driving the continuously rotatable shaft and ineans'imerated by said driving means for intermittently driving the intermittently rotatable shaft, both of said driving means comprising a worm and worm wheel connected by gearing having, different speeds, one of the driving Worm wheels being loosely mounted upon the continuously rotatable shaft.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a rotary turret having a plurality of work carrying spindles, a reciprocatory tool slide, means for indexing the turret at a rapid speed and comprising a pair of shafts, one a tubular shaft continuously rotatable and carrying means for actuating the tool slide and the other extending into said tubular shaft and intermittently rotatable, means for rotating said tubular shaft continuously and means for rotating at an accelerated speed said intermittently rotatable shaft from said tubular shaft, each of'said shaft rotating means comprising a worm and worm Wheel, one fixed to the tubular shaft and the other loosely mounted thereon, gearing for imparting motion from one worm to'the other and having different speeds, means driven by said loosely mounted worm Wheel for driving the intermittently rotatable shaft and means carried by the tubular shaft for interrupting the driving of said intermittently rotatable shaft.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a rotary turret having a plurality of work carrying spindles, means for indexing the turret at a rapid speed and comprising a pair of shafts, one a tubular shaft continuously rotatable and the other extending into said tubular shaft and intermittently rotatable for indexing the turret, meansfor rotating said tubular shaft continuously and means for rotating said intermittently rotatable shaft from said tubular shaft, a sliding tool carrier shiftable toward and from the turret, and cam mechanism carried by the tubular shaft for reciprocating said tool carrier.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a rotary turret having a plurality of work carrying spindles, means for indexing the turret at a rapid speed and comprising a pair of shafts, one a tubular shaft contmuousl rotatable and the'other extending into said tubular shaft and intermittently rotatable for indexing theturret, means for rotating said tubular shaft continuously and means for rotating said intermittently rotatable shaft from-said tdbular shaft, each of said shaft rotating means comprising a worm and worm wheel, one fixed to the tubular shaft and the other loosely mounted thereon, gearing for imparting motion from one warm to the other and having different speeds, means driven by said loosely mounted'worm wheel for driving the -intermittently rotatable shaft and means carried by the tubular shaft for interrupting the driving of said intermittently rotatable shaft, a shding tool carrier shiftable to- Ward and from the turret, and cam mechanism carried by the tubular shaft for reciprocating said tool carrier.
