Abstract
392,324. Photographic plates. KODAK, Ltd., Kingsway, London.- (Staud, C. J. ; Kodak Park, Rochester, New York, and Webber, C. S. ; 271, Norfolk Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, both in U.S.A.) March 11, 1932, No. 7379. [Class 98 (ii).] A silver halide emulsion layer is hypersensitized by means of an ammonia compound containing at least one alkyl group and at least one hydroxyl group. These compounds also render the emulsion layer and/or the support more plastic, and also improve the keeping properties of the latter. The ammonia compound, e.g. mono-, di-, or tri-ethanolamine, #-alkylhydroxylamines, #-diethylaminoethylalcohol, #-diethylaminopropylalcohol, and diethylaminopropylalcohol, may be added to the support or the emulsion, or the emulsion layer may be bathed with a solution of the compound. In examples : (1) acetone soluble cellulose acetate is dissolved in a mixture of triethanolamine and acetone and a film formed therefrom ; (2) a 0-2 to 0-5 per cent aqueous solution of the ammonia compound, a little ethyl alcohol being added if necessary to obtain a clear solution, is used for hypersensitizing a panchromatic film ; (3) the hypersensitizer is added to the emulsion at any stage in its manufacture, in amount of the order of 0-5 per cent by weight of the emulsion.
